"Why would I pay your rates when someone quoted me a third of that using AI?"
A question we hear more often now. Fair question. Here is our honest answer.
We use AI too. Extensively. Our own product, Discreetly AI, was built with AI as a constant collaborator. So the difference is not who uses AI. It is what surrounds it.
AI-assisted software development can produce something that runs in an afternoon. What it will not do on its own is ask the questions that decide whether the software survives contact with your business. What happens when two users edit the same record? When the import file is malformed? When the database write succeeds but the notification fails? Unsupervised, AI answers none of these. It gives you the happy path, and the happy path is the easy third of the work.
When we make a technology choice, we can explain why it beats the alternatives for your situation. When we write code, we design for failure: what happens when the network drops, the transaction half-completes, the input is garbage. When AI suggests an approach, we have the experience to judge whether it is genuinely sound or just a near-term fix that works today and collapses at scale.
Solution design also looks wider than the code. How does this system fit your existing tools and data? Who maintains it after launch? What does your team actually adopt, given how your company works day to day? Those answers come from experience on similar projects, not from a prompt.
We know what shortcuts turn into, because cleaning them up is part of our business. Much of our work is modernizing systems that were built quickly years ago and then held together with workarounds. The wave of cheap, unsupervised AI-generated builds happening right now is creating the next generation of those rewrites. You can pay for engineering judgment once, or pay for the rebuild later.
AI makes good engineers faster. It does not make inexperienced ones good. The market is currently full of consultants betting that clients cannot tell the difference.
